Getting back to my Roots

February 6, 2017 Style by Malia Anderson

In December of 2016 I had the privilege of seeing the brand new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture. To say I was in awe is an understatement. The building itself is breathtaking.  The way the story was told starting from the Slave Ships to the Obama's was an emotional journey as well as an eye opening one. I have never understood fully what leaving the south meant to my grandmother and after what I saw and learned I understand a bit more why she HAD to leave for a better life in California.  While there were some very harsh realities through out the museum I was able to find my happy place through the stories the clothing told.

These are some of my favorite photos from the NMAAHC

Coming home from the NMAAHC brought me new inspiration and returned some of the fire I thought I had lost for what I do and made me want to reinvent not only Malia Anderson the person but Style by Malia the brand. One of the things I came home knowing was I need to start blogging again. Style by Malia has always been about people and I think I lost an important person in my journey to build my empire. That person was me. Coming home from my vacation to DC gave me a clear head and an open heart. So in an attempt to get back to my roots and to wear this stunning skirt that has been hanging in my closet I thought this made a stunning first blog outfit.

I have to say I love this outfit. I was not sure if it would work as a look but I love how it turned out.  The Chambray Shirt is from Lane Bryant The African Maxi Skirt is from Grass-Fields

My Sunglasses are Michael Kors from Lens Crafters. The wooden necklace is from Rabbit Rabbit fair trade in Saint Helena. My earrings are from Chico's
